Are you ready to think outside the milk jug?
Rachel Hester from Whoopsy Daisy Farm tells about her journey to raising dairy sheep and their deep-rooted history. There’s a reason homesteading and homeschooling often go hand-in-hand. We recognize the shortcomings in the system and want to create a better childhood and a better future for our kids—one where they are free to be creative, healthy, active, smart, resilient, and resourceful. But as simple as that kind of life sounds, it’s not always easy.
Today’s podcast guest gets it. Ginny Yurich is the genius behind the 1000 Hours Outside movement and the author of the upcoming book Until the Streetlights Come On! Ginny discovered the benefits of unstructured outside play when her children were small. She was surprised to find that most children spend 1200 hours every year on a screen, and she began experimenting with the idea of spending hours upon hours outside with her kids in response to that notion. Ginny talks about the technological advances and modern-day comforts that are actually harming our children’s health, and social, mental, emotional, and physical development. If you have children in your life, check out the full episode to learn more about the 1000 Hours Outside movement and how you can raise happy, healthy, well-rounded kids in this tech-heavy culture.

Fall is here again, and I'm ready to pull out my starter and make ALL THE BREAD for soup season. But have you ever wondered what is up with sourdough? In the last few years, sourdough’s been blowing up the internet as people all across the world try their hand at baking tangy, complex, DIY loaves and recipes. In today's episode, we'll tell you how the sourdough craze got its start and how you can jump on the bandwagon just in time for your next bowl of soup.
Today’s podcast guest Kristen Stinson is the owner of The Curated Farm and my new go-to gal for all things sourdough. Kristen started her business as a way to connect with her community after moving to a 10-acre farm in rural Eastern WA. What began as a business to sell farm-grown calendula products at local farmers markets, quickly morphed into teaching sourdough classes to hundreds of people. Kristen recently was a speaker for the Modern Homesteading Conference in Idaho where she shared her knowledge and encouraged others in their sourdough journey.
She loves helping people get back to their roots and learn a skill that they can share with their families and communities, whether they’re living on a 50-acre farm or in an apartment downtown.

If you’ve ever tried and failed to make great sourdough or you’d like to give it a first-time shot, Kristen’s tips can tricks will give you the confidence you need to start baking and keep your sourdough alive and well—even if you’re an infrequent baker. Check out the full episode, and leave a review if you want to hear more episodes like this one!

Homestead Educator

When I graduated from college I know that I wanted to continue to teach people about agriculture and our food systems. When I began down the homeschool and homestead path, it only made sense to focus on teaching our next generation about the joys of homesteading.

My focus will be on not only how to homestead and homestead, but the mindset and personal growth that will help you on this amazing journey we are taking!

Keep growing!
